Volunteers at Crafton Heritage are proud to announce another night of Trivia for anyone who knows everything about Crafton or wishes to learn more.

We have worked hard to develop nearly 300 questions for your entertainment.

These questions have been checked and re-checked for accuracy.

A Pin Oak Dedication “Shorty”

On a cold and windy Friday afternoon on November 10th, 2023 Crafton Heritage with the help of The Shade Tree Commission, Crafton Public Works and Mrs. Ellen Hughes is welcomed a new tree at Crafton Park in memory of “SHORTY”. Thank you for all who attended this beautiful event.

Shorty made a difference in the life of Mrs. Ellen Hughes whose Bucket List was to honor this wonderful man who touched her life in the 1940’s.

The tree is located between the New Digital Marqui and Felix’s Bocci Court at Crafton Park, 15 Afton Ave., Crafton. A livestream of the dedication was attempted but due to high wind and traffic noise it was distorted and viewers could not hear what was being said. While we are certainly sad that this happened and that certain elements of the dedication could not be re-captured, Crafton Heritage recorded some of the details of the day along with a reading of a beautiful poem written by Mrs. Ellen Hughes herself. Be sure to visit our Facebook page or Remember Crafton When to learn more.

If you are ever in Crafton and have the chance to visit the memorial you will see a “Memory Medallion” containing a QR code that you can scan with your phone to learn more about this wonderful story. While we were saddened about the closing of the Gazette 2.0 we were gifted the opportunity to have a story published in their final edition that captures the life of Shorty, Mrs. Ellen Hughes and others he touched during his life in Crafton living in his little shack.

To share your remembrance about Shorty or any other Crafton story, email us contact@craftonheritage.org

Crafton Heritage will place Memory Medallions at historically significant locations as we continue to build our database of wonderful stories about Crafton. A Memory Medallion includes a QR code that when scanned will tell more of the story about which the medallion appears. Donations are always welcome to help our 501C3 continue to preserve stories like these. Please check back often for more details.

We seek to maximize the power of personal and community stories and shared history to enrich and impact lives.

Crafton Heritage is…

  • An inclusive collaboration that inspires community involvement in all aspects of its work,

  • A caring steward of history that engages broad audiences with authentic objects and the stories they tell,

  • A center for community life and learning that fuels civic pride and citizenship,

  • Committed to expanding public access to information through the creative use of technology.

Our Beginning

Crafton Heritage incorporated in March of 2019 through the cooperation among Martin Avery, Crystal Boehm, Susan O’Connell and Charles Wilson.

In May of 2019 we were granted a 501 (c) 3 status.

Through hard work and collective thought we create stories from secondary research while also conducting first-hand interviews. If we live it and can document it, we will. If happened long ago, we will seek it, link to it, or re-tell it.

Unlike traditional heritage organizations, or the former Crafton Historical Society, we are not a place or a museum to warehouse artifacts. We are close-connected residents who strive to accept artifacts, document them, return them to you or donate them to the archives in the Crafton Public Library (CPL). Sharing your knowledge and findings with us will help to ensure the education of current and future generations.

We are the story teller’s of Crafton. If what you are looking for is not written yet, just ask…our volunteers will help.

Visit us often for updates, email us your questions, and look for us around the community. We look forward to meeting you.

Our Mission

Crafton Heritage preserves and shares Crafton’s rich history through stories, collections, exhibits and programs in order to build bridges between our past, present and future.

Our Inspiration

Crafton Heritage was born out of the passion, purpose, and power of like minded community members. Our passion is to inspire our community with the power of personal and community stories and shared histories to enrich and impact the community. Our purpose is to collect, preserve, and share the stories and histories of Crafton by building bridges among the past, present, and future.

Together we empower one another to keep the spirit alive of all that came before us so that others like us will be inspired to continue the legacy started at Crafton Heritage.

Our Inspiration from:

The Story of Crafton

The Story of Crafton by Betsy Martin is a wonderful tribute to Crafton and its’ rich history.

Other books written that make you want to learn more about Crafton include Harry Meredith’s “80 Years of Reminiscence”.

Both of these books inspired us to want to continue the story telling in such a way that we could bring it to you quickly and abundantly for many years to come.

Our Inspiration from:

Reminiscences of 80 Years

In Harry Meredith’s manuscript “Reminiscences of 80 Years” he takes you back in time through eight entertaining decades of his own life living in Crafton during its early years.

Harry Meredith passed away on January 12, 1944 leaving behind a story that he likely intended to publish.

It wasn’t until boy scout Ken Hartland and his scout master Mr. Edwin LaQuay of Crafton began to historically document Mr. Meredith’s story in an effort to earn his Eagle Scout badge in 1977 that this story came to be known.

Mr. Hartland assembled (shown here) the manuscript from old yellowing and often torn papers likely typed by Harry himself. Limited copies were printed and bound locally.

Ken presented the manuscript and a micro-fish copy to the Crafton Public Library along with Mr. Edwin LaQuay and Mr. Meredith’s sister.

A copy of the manuscript highlighting Harry’s eight-years in Crafton is on file with the Crafton Public Library.

Ken Hartland copies the story of Harry Meredith for his Eagle Scout project in 1977.

Collections

Our collections come from sharing. If you would like to contribute to our portfolio by sharing your stories, pictures, clippings, books, videos, and artifacts, etc., we will be sure to document your items with proper credits. We can then return them to you or pass them along to our affiliates who are more prepared to warehouse the originals for current and future generations. Our intent is not to be a warehouse, but to be a digital resource when you look for information about Crafton’s rich heritage.

The home to the left was built by George Napier Glass est. 1906. Mr. Glass lived on Prospect Avenue in Ingram and in the 8th grade had to drop out of school to care for his mother after his father’s passing. He later formed Keystone Lumber which was located in the South Side of Pittsburgh. An article about this house can be found in the links section.

This is the cover of a story that is still being written. Stay tuned for this to be published as it becomes available. If you have a story to share, we are happy to present it for you. Contact us at contact@craftonheritage.org. We are happy to help you tell it if it is not already written.

Exhibits

What you are about to explore is a compilation of gifts from friends of Crafton Heritage. Each gift is given credit to the donor who graciously took the time to share their memories with us. Through their gifts we are able to catalog and use their contributions in compelling ways that will bridge the past and the present for you and for future generations. If you plan to reproduce any of these gifts in writing or through digital media, please notify us of your intent so that you can be sure to properly credit the donor and Crafton Heritage. If you are uncertain of how to do this, reach out to us at contact@craftonheritage.org. We welcome your voice and are here to listen and respond.

Feature Stories

Here you will find the feature story of the month. We are always working on new stories. This story may be derived from one or many sources. The topic could be anything relevant to Crafton’s rich history. For example, you may learn about an article published in the past, an interview tied to someone close to the subject, and even an oral history with someone who can share their own experiences on the topic. Check back often for updates and new stories to spark your interest. Remember, if you have a story of your own and want to share it, we can be reached at contact@craftonheritage.org.

Our Brand

Creating a brand that is memorable and aligned with everything that Crafton Heritage represents was an important process from selecting just the right color palette, the imagery, the typography and our tagline.

Our story begins with a rich history that took to heart our families, their homes and beautiful landscape. Our families. Our stories. Our home.

We carefully designed our logo with its canopy of trees and scenes of architecture to reflect upon a brand to carry us well into the future while engaging our community. Our monogram “C” is the memory that we want to create into the minds of all who visit, live, and work in Crafton Borough.

Our Invitation to You

provides easy and simple ways to contribute and become invested by sharing your memories, photos, time, talents, financial support, and more!

We are committed to expanding public access about Crafton’s rich history. Whether you are a current or former resident, we gratefully welcome your contributions.

Email or visit our website to become involved and learn more.
